Motion Capture with Rokoko

While working on a virtual house experience in VR, a client asked if they can add a virtual family: father, late for work and running hastily through the front door. His wife, having her glass of wine on the sofa at night. The kids, fooling around in the garden.

Yes, this can be done. But apart from creating the 3D avatars, it will take a couple of days to animate them. That was before we started using motion capture. Now we can create these animations within a couple of days. Thanks to motion capture.

The ROKOKO Smartsuit Pro is completely wireless and markerless. Perfect to use on any location: behind your desk, in a studio, in your living room or in your garden… It requires some time to get the most out of it, but soon it becomes a real blast to create humanoid animations.

But animating characters will always remain a tricky task. We couldn’t say it better than Charles Solomon did:

“Since the earliest days of the art form, humans have been the most difficult characters to animate. The more realistic the human being, the more difficult the animation becomes. Audiences will accept distortions in the actions of a cartoony character: no one has ever seen a four-foot-tall rabbit walk on its hind legs, so an artist animating Bugs Bunny enjoys considerable freedom. But everyone knows how human beings move, and if those movements are not rendered accurately, viewers won’t believe in the characters.” – Charles Solomon, Tale as Old as Time: The Art and Making of Beauty and the Beast

With motion capture, I believe you can deliver effective and cheap animations, tailored for a fast-paced market. The animation will not reach the level of detail like you would expect in a blockbuster movie, but it will be good enough for telling your story: either to the viewer or to other crewmembers in your project.

If you’re doing previz for a movie, animations for in-game cinematics, an explainer video on how to work-out, … this suit will give you new opportunities to bring a character to the screen. And you can use the mocap data ‘out-of-the-box’ without any cleanup.

If you want to increase the quality of the animation, the mocap data will provide a good start for 3D-animators. They’ll mainly focus on tweaking and/or exaggerating the animation, but at least they can skip the posing and rough animation as would be expected in a traditional 3D-pipeline. Which is still a huge timesaver.

Puraslim, a different look at bread

Puraslim is a radical change for the soft and sweet bread industry. This innovative range of mixes and improvers increases the cost-efficiency of bread production while keeping breads outstandingly tasty and fresh. Bread made with Puraslim has fewer calories and less (saturated) fats. Moreover, as no fat needs adding, Puraslim mixes are so convenient to use.

In this mobile experience you will discover the advantages of Puraslim. George will give you a different look at bread…

JVDW3D

Jelle Vandewiele graduated at School of Arts in Ghent as master in Media Art. For his graduation project, he created a self portrait game that gives you a notion of who he is. He recreated 3d environments from his memories and throughout the game you discover fragments of his life that shaped him.

The motion capture suit was used to catch the dance moves. They had their own style and the name of his YouTube account says it all: Funky Legz.

Santa’s message

Winter was upon us. I came in early in the morning at the office, grabbed a coffee, and wrote a little speech. After some quick scene building in Unity, I put on the motion capture suit and become Santa. Eight hours later, I published this social media post. It has a sad feeling to it – I’ll think I’ll create a more positive vibe for 2020 – but on the bright side: it illustrates how fast you can produce a simple animation.

GEUB

GEUB is a eight-part comedy television series, in which stand-up comedian Philippe Geubels plays a version of his dead-normal self in a dead-normal universe. The humor comes from the situations, the secondary characters but especially from the comic precision work of Philippe.

Together with VC Studios and Holofarm, we recreated the movement of an actor who was playing a character that’s experiencing VR and mocap for the first time.
